NEW MEMBERS, NOW WHAT?

The following post was written by guest blogger Melissa Coone, Gamma Iota–Mercer University, former Recruitment Specialist for the Fraternity.

The fun of recruitment is over, glitter and streamers from Bid Day are put away and you have a group of new members eager to learn and love your chapter as much as you do. As the next few weeks pass, it is important to keep new members excited about everything the chapter has to offer. Here are a few ideas to help shape and mold the new member period for your chapter to make the most impact:

  1. Encourage new members to get involved. New members are the future of the chapter and the sooner you encourage involvement, the sooner you will see how wonderful your chapter will be!
  2. Invite new members out to dinner or to an event. Remember your first few days in the chapter and how you felt? Inviting new members to events will help them get familiar and feel welcome in their new surroundings. Not to mention it helps strengthen the sisterhood and spark friendships that could last a lifetime!
  3. Support your sisters at new member meetings. It makes a positive impact on new members when they see sisters supporting other sisters. Offering to assist with new member meetings or even bringing a treat for new members can show the incredible sisterhood you highlighted during recruitment.
  4. Share your knowledge with new members. As the new members learn everything about Alpha Gamma Delta, you may have some tips for remembering all the Founders’ names or keeping certain facts straight. Share your knowledge and tricks of the trade. New members love to have older sisters involved and you never know—you might just meet your Little in the process.

These are just a few tips to guide your next steps as a chapter, but—most importantly—continue to focus on growing and strengthening your sisterhood. You worked so hard during recruitment to make the chapter great, so keep up the good work and help polish the next generation of Alpha Gams!
