Nutrition/Dietetics
How do you know what is in the foods you so you can make healthier choices? Use the nutrition facts panel on the food label. This is a table of contents to what is in the food. It also will help you determine the “nutrient density” of foods. A “nutrient dense” food gives you a large amount of nutrients for a small amount of calories per serving. On the other hand an”empty calorie” gives you little or no nutrients for in the calories consumed.

Healthy Eating
Check out the size…One reason people struggle with cutting calories is that restaurant portion sizes keep growing. The National Institute of Health reports today’s 6 inch bagel has 350 calories---210 MORE than a 3 inch bagel 20 years ago. A good way to cut restaurant portion calories is to ask for a take home box when you order your food. When your food comes, put half of it in the box right away. Benefit, a more normal portion size and a second meal you don’t have to cook!

Exercise
Disclaimer: Before beginning any exercise routine, be sure to check with your doctor.
Even if you’ve never been athletic or involved in a regular exercise routine, getting started is easier than you think! Begin with ten minutes of walking per day, and then add to it by five minutes each week. Your body will adjust easily, and you will be able to keep the pace up, making it easier to stick with your new exercise plan.

Events and Activities
Get ready for Halloween. Take a trip to the Pumpkin patch. If you can find one where you can actually walk to the field where they are growing, that would be great. Be certain to go through the corn maze if there is one, and soon the steps will add up! Finish the day off with a hot cup of apple cider. Flavored with spices and an orange slice, it is only about 120 calories!
