Gamma Phi Sister Named Ms. Georgia Tech

Jenna Campbell, Eden Smith and Erika Gemzer were top five finalists for the Ms. Georgia Tech competition. Eden Smith, who is an Industrial Engineering major from Atlanta, Georgia, later won the title of Ms. Georgia Tech. The sisters of Gamma Phi were very proud to see three great women earn such a high honor.

Theta Omicron Sister Named Homecoming Queen

Jessica Steel, Theta Omicron–Western Carolina University, was recently crowned Homecoming Queen. A senior majoring in Communications, Jessica is the first sister from Theta Omicron Chapter to receive this honor. Jessica is the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for the Student Government Association (SGA), a Resident Assistant (RA) and an orientation counselor.

Over Fifty Years of Sisterhood

A group of 22 Alpha Gams from Alpha Xi-University of Maryland who graduated in the 1950s gathered together on September 20, 2009 to reunite and share memories. The furthest member traveled all the way from Denver, Colorado.

Pi and Beta Kappa Alumnae Chapters Have Meeting Together

Pi and Beta Kappa Alumnae Chapters enjoyed a joint excursion for their opening meeting. The sisters met in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and ate at the Wicker Tea Room, then toured the Grant Wood Studio and Museum. It was a huge success and the groups plan to meet and tour an antique car museum and then lunch at the Marriott in Iowa City.

Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Club Holds Special Luncheon

The Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Club held a special luncheon in August 2008 where several "matured sisters" over the age of 80 were invited to a summer salad luncheon prepared by younger sisters. Transportation was also provided.

Beta Kappa Alumnae Chapter Participates in Single Marine Program

Beta Kappa Alumnae Chapter members were busy with their philanthropy project this past year. The group collected a large number of items for the Single Marine Program. Because of Beta Kappa Alumnae Chapter's generous assistance, the Marines and Sailors of Twentynine Palms will be able to continue sending much needed support and supplies to troops currently deployed from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

Alpha Gam Alumna Receives Prestigious Girl Scouts Award

Kristin Brunner, Gamma Beta–Florida State University, was recently recognized by the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey for her outstanding work as a Girl Scout Leader. She received the Honor Pin, the highest award given by the Girl Scout Council this year, which is selected by her peers. In addition, Kristin was featured in the Summer 2008 issue of the national Girl Scouts of the USA publication, called Leader Magazine. Alumna Releases Treasured Keepsake

Alumna Elizabeth Dye Walker, Eta–DePauw University, recently released a book about the home she grew up in, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Called The Old Stone House, “Traveller’s Rest”: A History in Bits and Pieces, this authentic account of The Stone House, located in West Virginia, contains detailed historical information, numerous historical photographs and an autobiography from her brother that provides much insight into the property. A treasured keepsake, the book is available from the Mineral County Historical Foundation by writing HC 72, Box 136, New Creek, WV 26743.

Alpha Sigma Chapter Achieves Highest Panhellenic GPA for Spring 2008

Alpha Sigma Chapter at Indiana University of Pennsylvania achieved an average GPA of 3.06, making it the group with the highest Panhellenic GPA for the spring 2008 semester. The Alpha Gams were the only Panhellenic group on campus with an initiated member GPA above a 3.0.

Zeta Chapter Celebrates Centennial

Proud members of Zeta Chapter-Ohio University celebrated their centennial anniversary on April 19-21, 2008. Over 300 women traveled to the Ohio University campus from 23 states, with one family having three generations of Alpha Gams attend the event. Highlights of the event included a speech from Paula Gallup Little, International Vice President-Alumnae, a bequest left from Barbara Caldwell of Zeta Chapter for $250,000 to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation for an endowment for a scholarship and recognition of Inez Winland, Zeta Chapter's Resident Housing Supervisor, for her 26 years of loyalty and commitment to the young women in the chapter house. Alpha Gam Named Finalist for TKE International Sweetheart Competition

Angela Schoen, Delta Sigma—University of Hawaii, has been named one of six finalists for Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity’s 2008 International Sweetheart. The TKE International Sweetheart is chosen based on GPA, honors and awards of distinction, extra-curricular activities, community service and involvement with the TKE local chapter. Though ultimately Angela was not selected as the winner, TKE applauds her for her commitment to excellence in all of these areas.

"This has not only been an honor personally, but it also has given me the opportunity to give back to the brothers of Tau-Epsilon Chapter,” said Angela. “It is an honor to represent all brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon and embody the values of the Fraternity. In addition, as a fellow Greek, I am honored to represent the Fraternity, upholding the vision and values of TKE."

Angela is a senior with a 3.66 GPA majoring in Management Information Systems. In addition to Alpha Gamma Delta, Angela is involved in several organizations on campus, such as Golden Key Honor Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Community Theatre.

Wichita Alumnae Club Hosts Flower Sale

The Wichita Alumnae Club raised $950 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation during their annual flower sale. The sale, which has been going on for 15 or 20 years, was very successful this year. Eleven members of the alumnae club participated in this fundraising event.

Sigma Chapter at the University of Illinois was very successful in the annual Greek Oscar Awards. Competing against 23 other sororities, Sigma Chapter received awards in nine categories:

Beta Upsilon Chapter Installed at Roosevelt University

After a semester of learning about Alpha Gamma Delta and the lifelong opportunities it provides for members, 19 women were initiated into the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. Susan Eberts Prater, International Vice President-Extension, officially installed the chapter. Over 20 Chicago-area alumnae, International Headquarters staff and a few members from Alpha Beta-University of Michigan and Beta Omicron-Illinois State University assisted with the installation. Congratulations to the Beta Upsilon Chapter!

Beta Xi 40th Anniversary Celebration Planned at Ross-Ade Pavilion’s Shively Club

Collegians and alumnae of Beta Xi Chapter-Purdue University are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the chapter in style!  Two days of activities in October will mark the four decades that Beta Xi Chapter has been the premiere women’s fraternity on campus! Festivities will begin Saturday, October 18 (this is a non-home game weekend) with house tours from 1 to 3 PM. Saturday evening we will gather at the spectacular Ross-Ade Stadium Pavilion which houses the Shively Media Room and Shively Club, the locations for our event. The formal festivities will take place from 5 PM to 9 PM and will include a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres and full dinner. The dinner program will include a look at the past, present and future of Beta Xi Chapter at Purdue. Some other surprises are being planned as well. Babysitting will be available at the chapter house during the dinner party. Members are asked to send a picture or two from undergraduate days (with identifying information on the back) for a video presentation of years gone by. The committee is also requesting written memories that will be posted on a memory board at the Saturday evening dinner. Feel free to send your pictures and written memories in care of the address below. The anticipated cost for the Saturday evening dinner is between $35 and $45 per person.  Donations to sponsor the event and help defray other costs are greatly appreciated. Alpha Gam Completes Marathon

Jennifer Bell Zoole, Epsilon Beta Chapter-University of Kansas and member of the St. Louis Alumnae Club, successfully completed the GO! St. Louis Marathon in just a little over five hours. Jennifer was cheered on by many friends, family and even her Alpha Gam sisters. Months of hard work and training paid off as she ran 26.22 miles through downtown St. Louis. The St. Louis Alumnae Club congratulates Jen on her success.

Tucson-Southern Arizona Alumnae Club Makes Impact on Community
They may be small in numbers, but the Tucson-Southern Arizona Alumnae Club made a large contribution—$5,000—to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation and two local Tucson, Arizona charities by selling Arizona license plate products. A unique fund raiser that proved successful, members of the Tucson-Southern Arizona Alumnae Club sold purses, lunchboxes and bird feeders constructed from Arizona license plates. Alpha Gams Convene for Colonial Week

Five Alpha Gam alumnae gathered together at the Mayflower Hotel during Colonial Week. Claire Hicks Long, Gamma Zeta Chapter-University of Memphis, is Honorary President General of the Sons and Daughters of the Colonial and Antebellum Bench and Bar 1565-1861. The four other Alpha Gams are from Gamma Alpha Chapter-University of Georgia: Tommie Elaine Perry Shattuck and Robin Redfearn Towns are Honorary State Regents of Georgia and Colonial Dames of XVII Century. Camille Redfern Baxter is Secretary General of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and Sally Wood Hlavey is Secretary General of the Daughters of Colonial Wars.

Two West Virginia Wesleyan College Alpha Gams Honored

Breann Thompson and Michelle Mayhew of Alpha Omicron Chapter were named Outstanding Seniors at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Breann, pictured at left, will graduate summa cum laude with a major in biology and minors in English Literature and Honors. A Fulbright Scholar, Breann plans to teach English in Indonesia next year.

Michelle, pictured at right, was also named the Outstanding Senior International Studies Major at WVWC and is a history and international studies double major. A Fulbright Scholar with a GPA of 3.9, Michelle plans to teach English in Malaysia next year.

Former International President Receives Award

Former International President Connie Yates Brown received a Woman of the Year award at The Tulsa Area Alumnae Panhellenic (TAAP) Women of the Year Luncheon on April 7, 2008. Awarded for her strong support and positive influence in the Greek community, Connie was also a past president of the TAAP. The event honored an outstanding sister from each of the TAAP alumnae groups. Congratulations, Connie!

Members of Kappa Gamma Chapter, along with the Greek community at Corpus Christi, participated in the "Greek"-ffiti Cover Up event as a part of their Greek Week festivities. More than 100 members of the Greek community spent a Sunday morning painting over the graffiti that plagues the community.

Alpha Gam Honored in Engineering Industry

Christine Fillion Miska, Zeta Zeta Chapter–Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was recently honored as one of the 2008 Women to Watch by Mass High Tech: The Journal of New England Technology. Christine, a systems engineering functional manager at BAE Systems IR Imaging Systems, was one of 10 women chosen from over 100 submissions. In addition to being an active member in Alpha Gamma Delta while at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Christine was a member of the crew team, cheerleading squad and band. Collegiate Chapters Throw Surprise Shower for Roosevelt Colony

Alpha Gam collegiate chapters donated unworn Alpha Gam t-shirts to the new colony at Roosevelt University so they could show their Alpha Gam pride on campus! Chapters sent their t-shirts and notes of encouragement to International Headquarters and the t-shirts were mailed to the Roosevelt women as a surprise. The women at Roosevelt send a warm thank you to the chapters who participated in the surprise shower.

Gamma Lambda Chapter Helps Find a Cure

The women of Gamma Lambda Chapter - Longwood University played a large role in the Central Virginia Chapter of JDRF’s 8th Annual Gala, helping to raise over $460,000 for a cure for juvenile diabetes. Gamma Lambda Chapter served as greeters, runners, security coordinators and customer service representatives for the event. Singer Elliott Yamin, who has juvenile diabetes, performed at the event. "Elliot was pleased to hear all about our philanthropy and some of the things we do around Farmville to help out children with diabetes," said Julie Jackson, Philanthropy Coordinator for the Gamma Lambda Chapter. "This event meant a lot to me and the other girls because we really got to see how much finding a cure means to these people."

Iota Chapter Raises Money in Greek Event

Iota Chapter at the University of Washington raised $11,384 for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center by participating in the Miss Greek 2007 competition. Brittany Mulvihill, who was nominated by her chapter as a contestant in the pageant, organized several fundraisers to raise money for the event. Fraternity men were invited to dinner, a date auction and several other fundraisers were hosted by the women of Alpha Gamma Delta. In addition, Brittany and her chapter sisters sent letters to local businesses to gain sponsors.

"This type of event is the reason why people should join the Greek community, because it epitomizes what amazing opportunities come out of being apart of not only Alpha Gamma Delta, but the Greek Community as a whole," Brittany said.

Miss Greek 2007 is hosted by Delta Tau Delta Fraternity each year. As a whole, the Greek community at University of Washington raised $75,800 for cancer research.

Epsilon Upsilon Alumnae Chapter Donates to Meals on Wheels

The Epsilon Upsilon Alumnae Chapter hosted a program on diabetes awareness on Monday, October 22, 2007.  Attendees were asked to bring a package of Glucerna, a diabetic nutritional supplement, as admission to the program.  The donations were delivered today to the Meals on Wheels programs for delivery to diabetic elderly in the community.

St. Louis Alumnae Club Volunteers at JDRF Walk-A-Thon

Ten members of the St. Louis Alumnae Club of Alpha Gamma Delta volunteered at the registration tent for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Annual Walk-A-Thon Fundraiser.  After participating at the registration tent, several members along with their husbands, children and puppies participated in the walk.  The members raised over $1500 for the JDRF.  The St. Louis Alumnae Club of Alpha Gamma Delta looks forward to volunteering again next year.

Alpha Gam Rewarded for Culinary Skills

Jessica Raia-Long, Gamma Iota Chapter - Mercer University, was a finalist in the Small Business of the Year awards for The NoHo Bistro, a restaurant she founded in May 2004. Ryan Tully McLaughlin, Epsilon Nu Chapter - University of Central Oklahoma, was crowned Mrs. Oklahoma United States 2007.



Alpha Gamma Delta
